55,000 students in five years: the 2026–2030 roadmap

Japan has raised its international-student target from 300,000 to 400,000. With AJLIB and BSSAJ, the plan grows intake 10% a year from 2026 across four semesters to a total of 55,000 — backed by a network of JASSO-approved schools, quality improvement, and an international education fair with the Embassy.

This document was presented by Nagamatsu Faruk himself, as President of BSSAJ. ‘We’ in the text is BSSAJ.

Bangladesh has more than 200 student consultancies. If each sends about 45 students in each of four semesters, roughly 9,000 a year is achievable. AJLIB (active since 2019) accounts for over 70% of students, and AJLIB with BSSAJ over 90% — so a joint plan of the two is the route to delivery.

What has to happen

  1. An urgent joint AJLIB–BSSAJ meeting; an online meeting with the Ambassador.
  2. Links with good JASSO-approved language schools and quality improvement for students.
  3. An international education fair with the Embassy, showing Bangladeshi students' skills to representatives of Japanese institutions.
  4. Fixing the VFS lodgement process — Japanese schools have warned they will not take Bangladeshi students next semester if arrivals keep running one or two months late.

Recommendations

Who does what — specific actions for governments and stakeholders, each of them checkable.

  1. 01Government incentives and training to bring each consultancy to a capacity of about 45 students per semester.
  2. 02A formal network with quality Japanese language schools approved by JASSO.
  3. 03An international education fair in Dhaka with the Embassy, where representatives of Japanese schools meet students directly.
